![]() Augments can allow you to heal when dealing damage, stun nearby foes when you execute one of them, boost your stats when at low health, and plenty more besides. ![]() You’ll have your choice of two new Augments at the end of each mission, and depending on how well you rank, you’ll have access to better-quality ones. There are multiple tiers of augments, and generally, you’ll want to equip the higher-tier ones once you acquire them. What do Augments do, you ask? They essentially provide stat boosts and powerful passive effects. You can store up to 100 Augments per slot at a time, and will need to sell extra ones to free up room and earn some more cash. All your playable fighters share the same pool of Augments, and you can select three active ones from each slot. Those are another feature that really helps this game shine. At the beginning of any mission, you select your fighter and then pick their Augments. Saving the Human Race, One Mission At a Timeĭawn of the Monsters is split into a few chapters, each of which consist of several missions. Thankfully, I can confirm it’s fun to play and surprisingly complex to master. But none of that would matter in a kaiju game if the combat wasn’t fun. They all get good development as the story progresses and help make the world of Dawn of the Monsters feel alive. There’s stern commander Claire Lionne affable and quirky Russian scientist Viktor Ivakin eager researcher Sofia Cruces and the man who manages the money, Conrad Fosco. You’ll also grow to appreciate the other members of the Sunrise crew. They’re named Megadon and Ganira, and they’re actually first-generation Nephilim that are somehow being controlled by the organization you work for, called D.A.W.N. Besides them, the other two members of your team might surprise you. Eiji rankles at authority, and Jamila is desperate to honor her parents, who were destroyed in the aftermath of a Nephilim attack. ![]() Eiji can transform into a giant humanoid called Aegis Prime, while Jamila pilots a towering robot called the Tempest Galahad. The main characters you’ll grow to know the most are Eiji Murasame and Jamila Senai. You can chat with your crew members aboard orbital space station Sunrise, and read up on fascinating lore in the Archives. While the main arc is easy to follow, and revolves around an advancing horde of giant creatures known as Nephilim, dark secrets, and powerful corporations, there’s a lot of care given to the little details. What helps set Dawn of the Monsters apart from lesser examples of the genre is the surprisingly well-told story. Keep reading this Dawn of the Monsters review to see why fans of the genre, and even those new to it, need to check this game out. Instead, what I got was one of the most faithful examples of the kaiju genre in game form, and the most fun I’ve had since Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee. I just hoped it would be another enjoyable game by a team I’ve grown fond of. And honestly, I had no real expectations going in. Not only that, but they put their hearts and souls into this game about beating the living crap out of giant monsters.
